Marisa recently finished her M.S. in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at MSU with a specialization in Gender, Justice, and Environmental Change and is beginning her Ph.D. studies as a FLAS Fellow studying Portuguese, with plans to conduct doctoral research in Brazil. Marisa’s research interests include: conservation and development, social and environmental justice, public participation in environmental decision making, and water issues in urbanized areas. Her M.S. research explored stakeholder attitudes and perceptions toward innovative storm water management practices, such as rain gardens and constructed wetlands in the greater Lansing, Michigan, area under the Phase II storm water permits mandated by the Clean Water Act. Prior to beginning graduate study at MSU, Marisa worked for five years as the Population and Environment Outreach Coordinator at the National Wildlife Federation’s Great Lakes Natural Resource Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Marisa also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala, where she worked on a USAID-funded project through CARE to facilitate environmental education programs and assist local governments and community leaders in assessing the potential for ecotourism in the region.
