Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS): WID and CASID offer competitive US Department of Education Title VI-supported Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships to US graduate students enrolled in degree programs at Michigan State University which focus on international development and globalization. GJEC Fellowships for Dissertation Research and Completion
Generous funding provided by MSU's Graduate School has allowed for the development of the following opportunities:

GJEC Dissertation Research Fellowship - Two $10,000 awards*
Eligibility for Dissertation Research Fellowship: Ph.D. students at MSU who have completed all requirements for their degree with the exception of their dissertation research. Applicants must have dissertation projects which focus on the gender dimensions of environmental and/or agricultural change.

GJEC Dissertation Completion Fellowship - One $10,000 award*
Eligibility for Dissertation Completion Fellowship: Ph.D. students at MSU who have completed all requirements for their degree program including dissertation research. Applicants' dissertations must focus on gender or other social inequalities as they relate to environmental and/or agricultural change.

Denmark - Spring 2008

Subjects Offered: English. Students will be required to enroll in a minimum of twelve, maximum of sixteen, semester credits. Aarhus English Department courses are taught exclusively in English. Students will have full access to all courses provided by the department, including English and American literature, English Studies, American Studies, Canadian studies and Anglo-Irish Literature and Culture. Students may enroll in any of the University of Aarhus' courses, subject to the approval of their MSU department for the transfer of credit upon return to the United States.

Internships

Environmental Internships:

The Gender, Justice and Environmental Change (GJEC) specialization at MSU is offering internship opportunities with leading environmental and social justice organizations that are looking for hard-working, creative, and motivated students to assist them on various projects and campaigns. Students will work with supervisors from the host organizations and from their department or college during their internship, benefiting from their supervisors' experience and expertise in the environmental field. GJEC interns can choose from many local, national, and international opportunities. Please visit the GJEC website or email the internship coordinator at gjecic@msu.edu for more details.

Undergraduate Internship Program:

The Center for Gender for Gender in Global Context (GenCen) at Michigan State University generally employs two undergraduate interns each academic semester.

These are paid positions requiring a commitment of 10-20 hours per week. Applicants should be sophomores or juniors enrolled at Michigan State University. Excellent writing and research skills are required. Also necessary are computer and Web knowledge, an ability to work independently, and a strong interest in issues of diversity and women's issues on a global level.

The internships involve working on GenCen's Web site, the WID Bulletin, and other projects. Depending on performance, the position may continue through the academic year.

This is an excellent opportunity for students of International Relations, Public Policy, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Women's Studies, or anyone interested in development issues and their effects on women globally, particularly in the Third World. If interested, please mail, fax, or e-mail a letter of interest describing your qualifications and how the position contributes to your career goals, as well as a resume and brief writing sample to the GenCen office.

What can I do with a Specialization in Global Gender Issues?

The purpose of our specializations is to provide students with the theoretical tools and practical knowledge to address social issues affecting women and gender minorities in their chosen field. By combining a degree course of study with specialization curriculum, including internship opportunities and research projects, students are professionally prepared for a variety of career directions. Students in our programs have found employment opportunities such as the following:

  • Teaching in Higher Education
  • Working in non-profit organizations worldwide
  • Teaching K through 12
  • Research within US and international institutions
  • Post-doctoral positions
  • International and national health research or applied work
